ND-YAG LASER
Nd-YAG laser is used in to correct posterior capsular opacification, a condition that may occur after cataract surgery, and for peripheral iridotomy in patients with acute angle-closure glaucoma, where it has superseded surgical iridectomy. Frequency-doubled Nd:YAG lasers (wavelength 532 nm) are used for pan-retinal photocoagulation in patients with diabetic retinopathy. In certain cases these lasers are also used to treat eye floaters. YAG lasers can also be used to cut the anterior capsule for capsular block syndrome and capsular phimosis, as well as to cut vitreous strands in the anterior chamber. In malignant glaucoma, disruption of the anterior hyaloid face is performed with the YAG laser, and in refractory glaucomas, these lasers can be used for cyclophotoablation of the ciliary body. Other applications include the treatment of recurrent corneal erosions and vitreous floaters.
